Approach and Cultural Stories

“The Rhodope Mountain seems to be a Shakespearean play, kept alive by all kinds of vicissitudes and constantly changing sceneries.” Ivan Vazov, 1850-1921, Bulgarian poet, novelist and playwright

Perperikon, or Hyperperakion, or Perperakion is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, about 15 km northeast of the town of Kardzhali. Perperikon itself is perched on a 470 m high rocky hill. The gold-bearing Perpereshka River flows nearby, throughout a picturesque valley that attracted settlers since very ancient times. Today, dozens of archaeological sites have been discovered in this area. Perperikon once was the natural hub of this region. This isthe landscape, this is  the background.

The first aim of the Learning Quest was promoting the historical complex of Perperikon and popularise it as an outstanding site of European history. Motivating and stimulating young people from Kardzhali to become curious for the history of and the stories about this site was the second objective. How did it look here a thousand years ago? How did it feel to live here? How did this town, only a few stones are left of, once form the identity of the whole Eastern Rhodope region?

By following this curiosity, the pupils could become aware of the part, Perperikon played in several historical periods. Moreover, playfully they could gain skills like researching classical and new media, computer competence and of course team work. This isthe plan.
