Approach and Cultural Stories

The Virtual Tour Guide is developed for the local population. We aim to raise the local awareness for the cultural heritage of the city and for the UNESCO World Heritage status. Furthermore, the guide should stimulate an enhanced sense of place and contribute to strengthening of the cultural identity of residents and people from the wider region. Drawing their attention to the “unexplored”, the “less famous” cultural heritage of Salzburg is a vital element in this. Salzburg not only has a spectacular panorama of the cityscape, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or the “Sound-of-Music” saga. However, easily the impression can arise that Salzburg is not only associated with those aspects but indeed reduced to them. But in this city there is much more to discover…

The virtual tour guide offers different trails for exploring Salzburg through

  • the works and life of Georg Trakl (1887-1914),

  • historical windows and doors,

  • deciphering historical inscriptions,

  • its historical breweries, taverns and cafes

  • a time travel through historical maps, paintings, and photographs.

The virtual tourist guide will be developed for a mobile device using a geographical information system. Hence it will enable users not only to select and plan routes, but also to access location specific information. Also novel approaches to capture and share experiences with others are being explored.
