Salzburg Research (Austria)

Salzburg Research is the non-profit research organisation of the State of Salzburg. It conducts applied research in several areas of information and communication technologies (ICT) with a focus on creating and managing digital content. The company employs about 60 researchers, project managers, and technical and studio personnel. It carries out socio-economic, market and user studies and technical research & development in the application areas of Digital Media, eCulture, eTourism and EduMedia.

HERITAGE ALIVE! is a project of the company’s eCulture Group that builds on rich expertise and know-how developed in a variety of commissioned studies and development projects carried out for the European Commission, the Council of Europe, and the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

Tasks and activities

      • Overall project co-ordination and management;

      • Development and implementation of a Virtual Tour(ist) Guide in Salzburg (pilot action 1) - in collaboration with the Department for the Preservation of the Historical City of Salzburg;

      • Development of a Virtual Tour(ist) Guide Implementation Plan;

      • Identification of local and regional stakeholders;

      • Establishment and maintenance of project website;

      • Development of Good Practice Guidelines for ICT application in World Heritage sites;

      • Development of a Pilot Action Showcase and demonstration at target group specific events;

      • Production and distribution of promotional and documentation material;

Local / regional Context

Salzburg Research’s eCulture Group is committed to share its expertise with regional cultural heritage institutions and collaboratively develop innovative concepts and ICT solutions for enhanced access to cultural heritage knowledge and experiences.

In HERITAGE ALIVE! Salzburg Research works in close co-operation with the Department for the Preservation of the Historical City of Salzburg. Furthermore a number of regional cultural institutions provide digital content as well as their subject knowledge for presenting unique features of the historic centre of Salzburg in novel interactive ways.
